another way is to ditch the MM and do what i do:

melee char: dervish (i use melonni. you can just use yourself) any skills are fine, but the fast swing skills are the best

n/rt: splinter weapon, nightmare weapon, order of the vampire, and your choice of blood hexes/spells

n/rt: splinter weapon, warmonger's weapon, your choice of curses

monk: i use a LoD/infuse monk

for henchies, use: devona, another melee hench, mesmer hench, monk hench.

the purpose of this setup is to go all melee, and have the two necros buff the living daylights out of them. the combined AoE melee attacks vastly surpasses anything a group of eles can put out, and allows you to mow through most pve areas. obviously, don't try this against the drought.... it hurts.

As far as Minions dying too fast....maybe if you are using the noob bone minions/bone fiend build from Shing Jea they die fast. I find when using the horrors and Flesh Golem they can be nice little tanks, and give enough time for the spread of Death Nova, so when they do go it leaves enemies very easy to mop up.

I've had more requests/gg's for bring Death Nova on Olias than any other skill. Olias and the monks seem to keep the minions up well(too well, at times), and heroes will beat out minion creation against a human 9/10 times. If you can prove otherwise, show us the film.
